I'm actually just listening to the Librivox recording of Moby Dick at the moment, and it's really well done by a solo reader. He generally puts two or three chapters together in each recording, to make them roughly half an hour each, and there are still 44 of them, so that is probably how many epidodes it would take, at least.

Yes, you could probably make me appreciate the book (my latest blog post is actually about how frustrated with it I am) but I'd really rather we did something else...

Um - a "no" vote on Moby Dick here - sorry. Dr. Jekyll, OTOH, sounds great. AND - I just spent, like, an hour screaming with laughter over the movie parodies site. Heather, you ROCK. That thing is awesome.

Moby Dick is like castor oil - it's something I know I ought to ingest but I have never been able to bring myself to do so. I would listen to it, but I would rather do something else... I still think The Scarlet Letter would be cool. I expected to hate that book when I read it in school, and I loved it.
About Mr. March - I think it is interesting how Alcott treats him. On the one hand, the whole family misses him terribly when he is away and wants him back. On the other hand, he is clearly portrayed as sort of useless and oblivious. I think she is doing that on purpose - revering him with her words, but showing him as he is by his behavior. She had clear reason to be ambivalent about her own father, so this makes sense to me.

I second Caroline and Nina on their future book picks! Also, the super-awesome bivalve that you have pictured above is spelled 'geoduck.' It's a native American word that means 'dig deep.' They make particularly good sushi and (I don't know if you mentioned this in the episode) scientists say they can live to be more than 150 years old!!!

Nerd moment aside, the reason I don't know if you mentioned the lifespan of a Puget Sound Geoduck, is because I can't get it to play off of the blog page and haven't been able to get anything but episode 102 off of the blog since it was originaly posted. I have it downloaded on my i-tunes at home so it's not a huge deal but I just thought I'd see what the deal is so I can go back to listening at work from time to time.
